A new medical study has shown that high doses of vitamin A dramatically reduced the duration of measles and cut down the death rate by more than half in a group of children suffering from a severe form of the highly contagious disease.
Measles kills about two million children a year,especially in Third World countries,despite vaccines that could prevent the viral disease.There is no specific treatment.
In the United States,the incidence of measles is sky-rocketint,increasing over 400 per cent to 17,850 cases from 3411 cases reported in 1988,according to the centre for Disease Control in Atlanta.
Scienctists who carried out the study recommanded that all children with severe measles should be given vitamin A supplements,regardless of whether or not they are deficient in Vitamin A.They found that the vitamin A has a remarkable protective effect for people suffering from the disease.
Vitamin A is abundant in cod and other fish,cheese,liver,tomatoes and other vegetables.
The World Health Organisation recommends supplements for all children with measles in areas where the vitamin is deficient in the diet and in countries where thr fatality rate is 1% or higher.But some doctors said the dose should be at least double that recommended.
In the most recent study,189 children admitted to a South African children hospital suffering from the disease were randomly assigned to received different amount of vitamin.The results showed those who took more of the vitamin recovered only five days after the measles rash appeared.
